Politics and Poetry

A friend of mine said to me the other day, “you’ve been very serious lately on your blogs, why don’t you lighten up once in awhile.”

I think what he really meant was, why not criticize the democrats once in awhile.

All right, the democrat candidates and there are really only two, Hillary and Bernie, unless Joe decides to run. Personally, I hope he does not get into the race, but political ego is a powerful motivator and he probably will decide to run.

As for Mrs. Clinton, there are a number of important clarifications that she has yet to explain and I’m not referring to her emails. I like the idea of a woman president, but I’m not sure she is the ideal choice.

Senator Sanders has excited the democratic grass roots, but I don’t see him staying and standing in the end. He has the support of the disenchanted, but that’s not enough to get him elected, unless his opponent is “The Donald.” I can’t think of anything worse that Donald Trump becoming President of the United States.

But to keep in lighter…here’s a poem I wrote a couple of years ago. It’s appropriate for the current season.

Autumn Times
© 2013 Rolland G. Smith

Who knows which leaf will leave its stem
When autumn breezes blow.
Do angels know or higher yet
When looking down below?

Fall winds are cool and gentle too
To brush the leaves off trees.
One here, two there, and then a group;
All sprinkling-floating sprees.

Are leaves, like man, to pass when done
Or is there something more?
Or is there more ‘neath bark and skin
When spirit seeks a door?

Within the glory of their green
There lies a splendor bright.
There’s crimson reds and mottled gold,
Tis’ awesome in our sight.

But soon the colors fade to tan
And all that’s left is bark.
The leafy shroud then leaves for now
The branches now are stark.

The trees know more than man can think
And all they do is wait,
But man must reason to his core
And wonder ‘bout his fate.

It’s true for man that past his flesh
There is a spirit soul
That lives forever-learning love
Within each earthly role.

So what of leaves that cut their cord
When autumn breezes blow?
Do angels know or higher yet
When looking down below?
