North Korea's Nuclear Test

North Korea has once again conducted an underground nuclear test. Various governments of the world have condemned the test as not abiding under North Korea’s obligations to adhere to the United Nations Security Council resolutions.

The United States: President Obama says the danger posed warrants further swift and credible action by the international community. Whatever that means.

South Korea:  They condemned the test saying it further hampers reconciliation between the North and South. Yet they continue to house American Nuclear warheads on their soil albeit under US control.

China: Said they oppose the test and urge North Korea to abide by its promise to denuclearize. China is the dragon in this issue.

Great Britain said it condemns the test and that it only serves to increase regional tensions. How about the global tensions GB would create if it pulls out of the EU.

Germany was a bit wishy-washy. They condemned the test and said the international community should consider further sanctions.

Here’s where the condemnations get even more tricky.

Russia didn’t condemn the test, but urged North Korea to adhere to United Nations regulations. They added that the test should not be an excuse to increased military activities in the area. They were referring to the US.

France: Ah the hubris. President Hollande urged North Korea to immediately comply with its international obligations and dismantle its nuclear and missile programs.

There were 210 French nuclear tests from 1960 to 1996. Granted in the early days of tests all nuclear powers were conducting tests including the United States. In 1996, in France’s last test in French Polynesia, they were asked not to do the test. They went ahead with the blast anyway.

Japan is also suspect in its condemnation. They said the testing was a grave threat to the safety of Japan. The Fukushima Diachi nuclear power disaster may be a worse threat to Japan and to the world than the North Korean test.

Unless the Japanese Government acknowledges the potential damage of a quake caused meltdown of the reactors at Fukushima and calls in nuclear experts from all over the world to help minimize the problem, they have no credence in their condemnation.
