Election Day is a remarkable message to
the world that democracy and the constitutional process works.
Individual citizens in the villages, towns
and big cities of America peacefully exercise a sacred franchise and cast a
vote.
It is a simple act and an extraordinary
gift. The right to vote is so fleeting, so precious, and so hard earned in our
history. And daily it is re-earned by our nation's warriors. Their sacrafice of
blood and time is our motivation.
Hundreds of millions of people in the world
do not have the right to vote and they want it.
America is one of the few countries where
leadership changes peacefully. This is the magnificant legacy of democracy. We
learn from election victories to be compassionate and honor those whose ideas
and service are different, but no less noble.
We learn from defeats that there is grace
in change and all power is fleeting.
Each elections forces us to re-examine,
not only our responsibility to vote, but also the process and to realize that
democracy is a path toward perfection. It is never perfect in any given moment.
