Belhurst Castle

The forward of a book on Belhurst Castle by David Sakmyster reads as follows:

"On the outskirts of Geneva, New York, it stands in a beautiful grove amidst ancient oak trees, high on a cliff with a sweeping view of Seneca Lake. It is a castle in a style and grace rarely seen this side of the Atlantic. Constructed with red Medina limestone, its dormers, balconies and turrets stand in stoic repose, as if contemplating a long and memorable past."

We are here at Belhurst for a couple of days. A treat to ourselves for our 50th wedding anniversary. Belhurst Castle sits on a site of the ancient Seneca Indian village of Kanadesaga. It was home to the Council of Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy.

You can feel the history of this place and the region. More later, if I have the time. I'm off to explore and experience.
